The Syrian regime was hoping the Western world sees the revolutionaries as AlQaeda, but Islamists represented a minority in the uprising against the Bashar Assad dictatorship. Nevertheless, the brutal crackdown that followed, coupled with the regime's desire and the Saudi sponsorship, extremist groups like Al-Nusra started to gain prominence. Observers think this radical group will never turn mainstream in Syria.
