Lebanon’s President Michel Sleiman summoned the Iranian ambassador in Beirut, Ghadanfar Rukn Abadi, to discuss statements by the head of Iran's elite Quds Force Qassem Suleimani that Iraq and southern Lebanon were controlled by Iran. "Iran is now also present in southern Lebanon and Iraq," Suleimani said, in quotes published by Iranian news agency ISNA. "In fact, those areas are in a way influenced by the Islamic Republic of Iran's performance and thinking."

While Abadi reiterated Iran’s denial of the statement, the Lebanese President asked the ambassador to pass on a message to the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad that Lebanon’s relations with friendly and brotherly countries are based on non-intervention and mutual respect of sovereignty.
