The American Damascus Community School has shut down in the past few days, due to the security situation in Damascus. Families have moved out to put their children in American, or international schools abroad, whether in Beirut, the United States, or Dubai.

Damascus had shut down this American school in 2008, following an American attack. But the school reopened in 2010 due to the Obama administration's rapprochement with the Syrian regime, which was most visible in the dispatching of Ambassador Robert Ford. The state Department has an updated web page on the school.

This closure is significant as it targets the merchants' class in Syria, the regimes major allies.
