(Reuters) - Saudi Arabia will not renew the work permits of foreign workers who have spent six years in the country as part of its plan to create jobs for nationals, its labour minister was quoted as saying on Monday.
This is bad news for expatriates who consider Saudi Arabia home. The issue for the Saudi monarchy lies in tackling the high unemployment rate to prevent any social unrest. The leadership understands that the generous multi-billion dollars packages only bought them time. They have to solve some of the very serious economic problems early on, and this is exactly what they are doing. There will be no political reforms, only economic. Will that be enough? I am afraid it might be to silence any dissent for some time at least.
